In this Chinese import, an otter’s move to a quiet lakeside island becomes a meditation on peaceful coexistence.
Otter’s new house stands empty. Then the neighbors begin to arrive. Beaver brings supplies to construct a bed. Mr. and Mrs. Antelope show up with a round table. The Sheep family would like to sew a quilt. Goose’s children deliver cattails to make cushions. With each knock at the door, the home—and the pages—grow fuller, brighter, and more alive. Just as Otter is settling in, a thunderous knock rattles the house. It’s Bear: large, unexpected, impossible to ignore. Bear can’t fit through the door. Everyone attempts to help him inside; they succeed, but in a burst of splintered wood and comic chaos, the thoughtful gifts are scattered. What might have been a breaking point instead becomes a turning point. Together, the neighbors rebuild. More importantly, they widen the doorway (literally and figuratively) so everyone can enter. The message is clear: Communal living requires flexibility, generosity, and room for the unforeseen. Soft, charming illustrations cleverly expand from spare to bustling as the cast grows, visually reinforcing the themes of inclusion and shared effort. An author’s note underscores the symbolism at play, with each visitor representing a different element of human connection. Sweet and sincere, this story celebrates kindness, resilience, and the grace of making space for one more.
A gentle tale to foster community building.
