School Library Journal
Jesse and Isabella set out to fill a large sheet of paper with their handprints, turning an afternoon of play into an engaging exploration of math, color theory, and spatial relationships. Because their hands look similar in size, Jesse selects red paint while Isabella chooses blue to keep their prints distinct. When Baby wants to join the fun, they mash one red-painted hand and one blue-painted hand together to make purple before adding their own prints to the page. The final sheet, covered in a colorful spread of handprints, delights the trio and they celebrate with a colorful high-five. Loney’s uncomplicated dialogue thoughtfully touches on concepts of size, shape, and spatial orientation, while Moreno’s cheerful, vibrant artwork depicts brown-skinned children engaging thoughtfully with their artistic creations. Helpful back matter offers caregivers additional suggestions for expanding hands-on math explorations.VERDICT A vibrant addition to the “Storytelling Math” series that seamlessly integrates early math concepts into a joyful, relatable story.
