The Multiplying Menace Divides is a sequel to The Multiplying Menace: The Revenge of Rumpelstiltskin. In the first book, Rumpelstiltskin was banished to the Abyss of Zero by Peter, son of the king and queen. In this sequel, the concept of division is introduced to young readers. As the story unfolds, Rumpelstiltskin and his sidekick, Matilda, are plotting revenge on Peter. As he searches for his dog, Zero, Peter notices something peculiar: Five of the 10 cows in the field have been turned in to frogs. Peter goes to the palace to tell his parents what is happening and finds that his own father has become a frog. He knows that Rumpelstiltskin must be behind this sorcery. His mother thinks that Matilda is the culprit. Peter tracks her to a cave in the swamp and finds out that she is indeed working with Rumpelstiltskin, who now possesses a magic dividing stick. The stick is used to show how division works, with whole numbers as well as fractions. The story also incorporates division rules for equations involving zero. These concepts will be understood more easily by children who already have a basic knowledge of division. The beautiful acrylic and pen-and-ink illustrations by Wayne Geehan add a whimsical element to the story. The author, Pam Calvert, weaves a fairy tale incorporating the rules of division. Young readers ages 7-10 will enjoy the book, which may also be useful for teachers who wish to introduce the math concept of division. The book should, however, be introduced to children after they read The Multiplying Menace: The Revenge of Rumpelstiltskin.
